Why do I have problematic skin—how I can make it better?

It is true that women everywhere take pride in their appearance and take the utmost care in how they look. This makes them always keep an eye on their face. So whenever pimples, signs of wrinkles around the eyes, blemishes or other kind of pigmentation start appearing they will start having sleepless nights and will look for some skin product or cream that can suppress and mask these signs.

Often women are told that these skin conditions are due to hormonal imbalance, too much stress in their life or from an erratic lifestyle. However, no one will look at the root cause of the problem. If it is due to a hormonal imbalance, why is the imbalance there in the first place? If due to stress, where is the stress coming from? If from an erratic life style, what can be done to correct it? If these root causes are not addressed, any treatment will only deal with the symptoms and not the cause. Women will always be curious to know why I am the one who get these skin problems ?

But there is one medical science that gives a clear explanation of why such skin problems appear. Ayurveda, one of the oldest systems of medicine, has a clear answer to such questions and gives each individual guidelines to look after their skin in a better way rather than always trying to mask the symptoms.

Ayurveda advises that whatever appears on our skin is not coming from across the road or due to someone’s curse. It is a reflection of what is happening on the inside of my body at the physical and mental level.

Ayurvedic science believes that due to an incompatible lifestyle, poor diet and living in an incompatible environment, the mind is unable to remain in a stable state which affects the body’s natural intelligence. When the body’s intelligence is affected in this way it will not be able to flush out the build up of toxins and free radicals (called Ama in Ayurveda) that naturally accumulate from the daily wear and tear on our bodies at a physical and mental level. These toxins slowly accumulate in the body and can manifest in the form of skin problems ranging from acne, pimples, pigmentation, blemishes & wrinkles.

According to Ayurvedic science each individual has a unique bodily intelligence and that intelligence is governed by three energies known as Doshas. They are Vata, Pitta & Kapha. Each of these energies has specific qualities and the dominance of one or other of these energies will determine the skin type of each individual.

These three energies oversee the functioning of each system in our body from the organs to the endocrine systems. As long as these three energies are in balance, our bodily intelligence will also be in balance and will be able to eliminate the toxins and one can enjoy healthy, clean skin full of colour and charm. However, if these energies not in balance then problems can appear on the skin and the qualities of the dominant energy will manifest in different kinds of skin conditions such as pimples, acne or wrinkles.

Once we are able to understand the cause of our skin problems, it becomes easy to choose skin care products that address the problem at its root rather than just masking them.

Skin care products that are based on authentic Ayurvedic principles will have ingredients that have more therapeutic qualities, to help eliminate those toxins from deeper skin layers and thus help revive one’s bodily intelligence. The reason for using therapeutic ingredients (herbs & minerals) as compared to just cosmetic ingredients is that therapeutic herbs have a much deeper action on our skin and are able to eliminate the toxins from deeper levels whereas cosmetic preparations will only be able to mask the symptoms and the underlying problem will always be there and will return again and again.

Ayurvedic skin care also provides an opportunity for each individual to understand why they have a particular type of skin problem and what can be done to prevent it occurring again & again. The dominance of one or the other of these three intelligences determines one’s skin type. For example, the qualities of the Vata energy are dry, rough and cold so when Vata is dominant in the person’s skin than skin will be dry, rough cold and prone to poor circulation, skin is thin and prone to wrinkles, blemishes, flaking, dark circles\under eyes and other such problems.

How does this happen? According to Ayurveda, this type of skin is called Vata skin and when such qualities are dominant in a person’s day to day lifestyle, environment and diet e.g. eating too much rough, cold, dry, stale & processed foods, living in a cold environment, working in a stressful job and lacking sweetness in diet and lifestyle. These qualities will affect the body’s intelligence and will produce toxins that will be dominant with these rough, cold and dry qualities. These toxins in turn which will start affecting the skin structure and make the skin more dry, fragile & rough. It will further dry up intracellular fluid and extracellular fluid which will lead to lack of oxygenation in cells. All these will make skin calls to shrink and destroy quickly. This will make catabolic process to dominate over anabolic and one will suffer from dark circles, wrinkles. dry and rough skin that lack glow and shine.

To correct and prevent this process one needs to use such Ayurvedic products that can bring warmth both to the deeper and superficial layers of skin, increase circulation and increase oileation that will give stability to skin cells. A person’s diet should also be modified to include warm, cooked nourishing & stabilising foods.

In the same way when the Pitta energy is dominant in someone’s skin their skin is naturally will feel hot, oily, sweat easily & feel sticky. These qualities will make the skin prone to acne, pimples, hyper-sensitivity and pigmentation.

How does this happen? This type of skin is known as PITTA skin and when such qualities are dominant in a person’s daily lifestyle, diet and environment e.g. eating too much hot, oily, fermented & processed foods, working in hot & humid conditions and having too much bitterness & anger in their life. This will affect the body’s intelligence and will produce toxins that will be dominant with these hot, sharp and oily qualities. This will make skin surface more hot change PH level of skin brings more blood to skin surface that in turn open the pores and get too much oil on skin surface which will start drying due to intense heat and gives origin to acne and pimples. If condition keep going the intracellular fluid start drying which will make skin surface more sensitive.

To prevent this one needs to use Ayurvedic products that can lower the PH level take the excess heat and oileation from skin cells, improve oxygenation to skin cells. In diet one need to make changes and remove those products that increase pitta.

Finally, when Kapha is dominant in someone’s skin it will be dominated with its sluggish, thick, slow oily & cold qualities which results in making skin more likely to hold water, cellulite prone, saggy chin, big pastules.

How does this happen? This type of skin is known as kapha skin and when such qualities are dominant in a person’s lifestyle, environment & diet e.g. eating too much cold, damp, moist, oily and sticky foods, lacking motivation in their life, feeling depressed or sad. This will affect the bodily intelligence and produce toxins dominate with sticky, oily, heavy, damp, cold qualities, making the skin sluggish, saggy, heavy & oily.

To prevent this one needs to select such products that have the ability to enrich circulation brings warmthness and able to flush the toxins and make changes to lifestyle & diet that will stop further accumulation.

So we can see from the above information that we have the ability to understand the cause of our problem and to select such products and regimes that only correct the symptoms but  also able to remove the root cause thus giving us to totally have a clear healthy skin and we can enjoy restful and peaceful sleep.
